Mindfulness is a shaping of existence into an experience of attention that is diligent, directed, courageous and honorable, based on what is happening right now. This attention requires a gentle, durable whole-hearted effort that is accepting and a resilient positive regard toward all that is arising. Mindfulness practice asks of the practitioner to cultivate concentration and to inquire in special ways into the nature of what is noticed and discovered. It is simple to learn yet requires a commitment of time and will.  It is learned initially by paying attention to the sensory events in the body and the act of breathing. Eventually mindfulness turns toward recognition of the human propensities towards attraction and aversion, an awareness of the events that arise in the mind itself and an inquiry into the patterns of our thoughts and how they influence our behavior.
